MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Detailed Information

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer to create highly detailed images of the body’s organs, tissues, and structures. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use ionizing radiation, making it a safer option for certain patients and conditions.

How It Works:
  • – MRI machines use a strong magnetic field to align the hydrogen atoms in the body.
  •
  • – Radio waves are then used to disturb this alignment temporarily.
  •
  • – When the atoms return to their original state, they emit signals that are captured by the MRI machine to produce detailed images of the body’s internal structures.
Types of MRIs

Procedure Preparation:

Pre Procedure

- Wear loose, comfortable clothing or a provided gown.
- Remove all metal objects, including jewelry, watches, or hearing aids.
- Inform the technologist if you have any metal implants (e.g., pacemakers, artificial joints).
- Some MRIs may require fasting or drinking a contrast agent.

During the Scan:

- The patient lies on a motorized table that slides into the MRI scanner.
- The machine produces loud tapping or thumping sounds; earplugs or headphones are provided for comfort.
- The patient must remain still to ensure clear images.
- Some MRIs may involve contrast agents administered via an IV for enhanced clarity.

After the Scan:

- No recovery time is needed unless contrast dye was used, in which case drinking fluids is recommended to help flush it out.
